Technically speaking, the PS3 is the superior of all the other consoles on the market. Also, the PS3 has the new disk format, blue-ray, and will not have to be revamped anytime soon.
One of the problems ahead for the PS3 starts with the developers. Most games, without tweaking settings with the PS3, do not look as good visually compared to their 360 counterparts. Personally, I think this unacceptable considering they have a larger disk space for more intensive visuals. I think developers have either not gotten use to developing for the system or they focus more on the 360 version and the PS3 is second priority. To be honest, even though I love my 360, this should not be the case.
Another problem that the PS3 has yet to overcome is proper marketing. Sony can advertise that the PS3 is both for casual and hardcore gamers quite easily. It has the six-axis controller motion controls that could hook in n00b gamers and it can have the exclusives for the hardcore. But, to this date, a video game has not used up over 50% of the potential of the motion controls ability and has normally been a tacky add on that the game did not need anyways. For example, (I won’t mention Lair…) Heavenly Sword was a pretty good action/fighting game that was definitely one of the better PS3 games of last year. Funny thing is, the only motion controls used were controlling an arrow fired from your bow. It felt really random to have all this button mashing and then suddenly use the motion controls. It just didn’t fit. At this time, Sony seems to be only marketing towards the hardcore fanbase without many hardcore games on the market that they can’t get elsewhere. They need to re-think their strategy.
Overall, the PS3 is a great system. The sad fact is, its potential is not being taken advantage of. I don’t expect a comeback this year (you can quote me if you so desire) but maybe next year they will have a good chance.

i think you are right when you say the machine is not being used to its full potential, however i think they need a bit more time.
When Franchises like EA sports, have a second go at creating games on this platform, they will have learnt more and im sure the games will improve.
and you are right again, sometimes blame should fall to the developers, who realize they can become lazy yet get more money due to the high prices of the ps3/ next gen games
If Sony have to do anything urgently, its to revamp there on-line network because it does not hold a light to xbox live.

In addition PS3 supports more media formats and you can use Linux on it. 360 doesn’t work well as a media center, especially when it doesn’t support the .mkv format.

360 = great (exept rrod)
ps3 = great (exept way too pricey and the internets not great)
wii = mediocre (graphics are barely beat ps2, controls are broken, internet is broken, everythings broken, even its best games would be mediocre on other consoles exept mario+zelda+supersmashbros)
